Viruses - an ever growing problem
Today Viruses and Trojans represent the largest security threat to any network. Just a few years ago companies would have only expected, at most, one large virus outbreak a year. Yet to date in 2009, we have already seen Bagle, Netsky and MyDoom wreaking havoc. And with Bagel and Netsky, there have been no fewer than 25 variants of each.
Today's viruses are far more potent than their predecessors. And whereas a few years ago a new virus emerging on the other side of the world would not pose a threat to most of us for several weeks or even months, today it can cause damage within just 24 hours.
In an attempt to keep up with and keep at bay this explosion of viruses, the Anti Virus manufacturers have been releasing update after update. In the first four months of 2004, Network Associates released over 50 updates to their A V scanner! Based on the previous year's experience we should have only expected a maximum of 18.
Against this background of growing virus threats and the need to keep pace with the latest updates, onsite personnel often struggle to cope with the ever increasing workload in ensuring and maintaining a virus free network. More worryingly, the trend looks as if it is only likely to become worse.
AV Assist - Antivirus Managed service
To assist our clients in the battle against viruses Brookland Computer Services has developed the AV assist solution as part of the Securecare programme.
Delivered by our engineers as a managed service they take responsibility for the control and deployment of antivirus updates across a client’s network.
By using AV management software such as network associates ePolicy orchestrator, our Network Operation Centre (NOC) can remotely monitor the updating process on each system.
Where required, the NOC can push emergency updates to individual systems to ensure that all systems are maintained at optimum levels of virus defence.
Under ‘normal’ conditions our NOC engineers will review client’s management servers one day after the release of regular/weekly updates.
Where updates across the network have not been automatically applied, these will be forcibly applied and any unresolved problems reported to the client to ensure appropriate action can be instigated to resolve outstanding deployment.
During times of a high security alert, in the event of an emergency update being issued our NOC team ensures that all systems are updated within four working hours of the updates release- subject to suitable network connections and system availability.
In the unlikely event of a virus penetrating a client’s network, priority access is given to our helpdesk and Technicare clients to ensure that the virus is cleaned and removed as quickly as possible.
